The Neighborhood Network Watch makes use of two main software applications. The first is TCPDUMP and the second is the Neighborhood Network Watch Keyword Analysis Application (NNWKAA).
TCPDUMP is a cross platform application used for network analysis and “packet sniffing,” that is built into many operating systems or can easily be obtained for free. This application is employed by the Neighborhood Network Watch to capture packets of data that are being transferred over networks. These packets of data contain information that is being sent or received that may include emails, instant messages, web sites, images, etcetera. The TCPDUMP application cannot only see all this data, but it also able to generate a duplicate of all the data for offsite analysis.
Neighborhood Network Watch Keyword Analysis Application (NNWKAA)
The Neighborhood Network Watch Keyword Analysis Application (NNWKAA) is a proprietary application developed for performing keyword analysis on captured network traffic. The application is Java based and therefore can be easily moved from one operating system to another. NNWKAA takes standard network data dump files from TCPDUMP and begins looking for keywords that maybe linked to terrorist activities or affiliations and or pose a threat to national, state, and communal security. NNWKAA makes use of the Neighborhood Network Watch Wordlist that contains a large list of keywords that are pertinent to these areas. The NNWKAA application then outputs a number of statistics about the contents of the traffic that include percentages, ratios, terror index, and the suggested network threat advisory.
